What a great book month. I liked them all, but loved three of the four! Here’s what I read this month
I literally sat staring at the computer screen because had a hard time choosing my favorite this month. But I pushed through and finally picked.
I really enjoyed Jeannette Walls’ Hang the Moon. I have enjoyed all of her books and this one did not disappoint. The Kincaids are the most powerful family in town. Because of the dad’s remarriage the daughter is shipped off to live with relatives. When he suddenly passes she returns to town and tries to fill his shoes. Now I will warn you there’s violence and a suicide in the book. She based this on some real life events…..and you know we are always reminded that life truly is stranger than fiction. I was committed to these characters. I couldn’t wait to get back to them and see what was happening. And a lot happened. There’s not a dull moment in the book. If I am remembering correctly there were two or so spicey episodes. But they come and go fairly quickly.
Now, Good Dirt by Charmaine Wilkerson was a super close second for this month’s favorite. An affluent family faces a break in and murder which turns their lives upside down. This is the same author that wrote Black Cake. The style is similar. She gets you all wrapped up in each character and then takes you on a journey of each of their pasts to help you frame the present. I still think about this book. I really enjoyed it!
What Happened to the McCrays by Tracey Lange is also an enjoyable read. The McCrays were once the ideal couple in town, but ever since the husband left town people have wondered how did this happen. There’s so much going on this book. But it is primarily about broken hearts, second chances and healing. Turns out what tore the McCrays apart is an unspeakable tragedy. They have to finally face it so they can move forward.
Lastly, The Wife, the Maid and the Mistress by Ariel Lawhon was a tough one to finish. I think I just didn’t connect with the subject and the characters. Now this is a little shocking because her other book, The Frozen River, was one of my top favorite books last year. And maybe I loved that one so much it is hard to follow. This one is based on a politician who just disappears one night. He has a wife, mistress and maid. The story is told from their perspectives. It is well written but I just didn’t connect with them….like at all. You may have a different experience. I will certainly read more of her books because she definitely gives you a lot in the story.
