Laundry Room Update

Laundry is definitely one of my favorite chores. I love that I can do other things while a load is running. And I absolutely love the fresh smell of clean clothes. Many of you know we bought this house….we did not build it. It is always so interesting the different things people choose to put in their homes. Well let me show you a little area that I am sure worked perfectly for the previous owners, but not so much for us.

They had this built in area for laundry baskets. Look, I am sure this makes perfect sense to so many of you. Personally, I have an aversion to using laundry baskets. For one thing, I really like the fold and put away immediately system. Secondly, the laundry room is right beside our bedroom so we can easily take our hamper basket directly to the washer. The kids have a laundry shoot that drops their clothes right into the room. So…. wash your clothes, fold them and put them away. Needless to say, I turned this area into storage for random things. I decided I could use a better storage system than these huge laundry baskets

I ordered these storage baskets from The Container Store

They come in three sizes. I ordered all three. The great thing is they all have the same length and width. The size difference comes in with the height. This makes them all take the same lid and makes them all easily stackable. I also ordered the labels so I could easily know what was in each. Now when I need something I can just grab the small marked basket that I need. These would also be great organizers in a closet or linen closet.

This is a much better system for me. While I was at it I went ahead and did a few updates to the folding counter. Here’s a before shot

From left to right I have a basket that we keep cloths for cleaning, a bin for those dirty cleaning cloths that need to be laundered, a bin for kitchen towels that need to be laundered, a little basket that holds random things (cleanser, the container we use to fill the iron), a little basket to catch loose buttons and change, some decorative clothes pins, a jar of detergent pods and a basket for dryer sheets.

I added these canisters that I already had to give me larger storage for detergent pods. The second canister is holding oxy pods and the third canister is holding dryer balls. I will link a similar canister set below along with the dryer balls.

I decided to update the window treatment while I was at it

You will notice some of the trim is unattached. I have reattached it on multiple occasions so it was time for an update.

This is a simple window treatment method. There are three of these little hooks installed above the window

You could find these at home improvement stores or Hobby Lobby. The treatment is just a rectangle and I used trim to make a loop to hang over the hooks. I didn’t even get the sewing machine out for this. I simply hemmed it by hand.

I am very happy with the update.
