Happy Wednesday, everyone! If you are in one of the snow covered regions of the country, I send you warm wishes and remind you that summer is just around the corner.
But what a great time to read a good book. Who knows…..maybe you will like one of these
This month’s favorite is The Secret Ingredient by Sue Heath. This is a sweet and delightful story. I will say the beginning is a bit sad but stick with it. Kate has a life changing event and basically stumbles through about three years of her life. She finally gets the courage to go back in her kitchen and that is the catalyst to her life, her neighbors’ lives and her community changing. It is a beautiful story about friends, community and showing up for each other. I loved this book.
Culpability by Bruce Holsinger is interesting. It has gotten lots of buzz. The story line is thought provoking. Essentially a family is driving in their minivan with the seventeen year old son at the wheel. When there is a horrible car wreck everyone tells their version of events to the investigators……each family member and the van’s AI equipment have a slightly different story. While I did not like the parents or their parenting in this book. It was interesting to consider just how much our phones, car systems, road cameras, etc. all have to say about the events of the day. AI is the reason I didn’t read this sooner. I am not dazzled by Artificial Intelligence but this book did make me think.
The Story Collector by Evie Woods was a very different read for me. Sarah finds herself in Ireland and discovers a diary from a young girl. She begins to piece together events from this girl’s diary and the family with whom she is living. There’s this whole fairy based town story (this is where they lost me) and she is determined to understand it all. Personally, I don’t care for fairies, magic, fantasy of any kind. So this was just not a good fit for me.
Lastly, Never Lie by Frieda McFadden was very good. Frieda generally does not disappoint. There’s this young couple who find themselves snowed in at a house they were thinking of buying. There are strange things happening at this house. It once belonged to a renowned psychiatrist who disappeared. They are forced to spend the night there and slowly discover all kinds of things. Listen, for 75% of this book I was convinced I knew the ending. Frieda had other plans. It was definitely a good suspenseful (not scary) read.
