Remodel Update

Well if you have been here awhile you know we started a kitchen remodel a few months ago…..like 12 months ago. Yes, welcome to the one year anniversary of the first demo day. HGTV, I am going to be permanent negative on your 30 minute makeovers.

Let me just say upfront we still have two things to do. One is the mechanics of the stove hood still have to be connected. We also have a couple of switchplate covers to paint and put in place. But let’s take a look at the 99.9% finished product.

Remember the Kitchen Before

There were a couple of big hangups here. Getting the wall removed was a biggie. It was a support wall so we had to put in a header. Also, we affectionately call the kitchen tile “end of times tile”. It was put down to stay. It did not want to be removed. And, the appliances……it took about 10 months for the appliances to arrive. It also was quite some effort to find workers but once we did most of them really showed up for us. Most of them :).

Once the tile was up, the flooring guys worked magic. They installed new planks to match up with the existing greatroom floors, sanded everything and restained. The electrician was phenomenal. The painters were rock stars. And I would have quit long ago if not for the encouragement of the counter top lady. She kept pushing me across the finish line.

After painting 10 or so samples on the walls and liking none of them, I did a virtual appointment with Sherwin Williams. She suggested the Gossamer Veil and I literally love it.

Y’all I love it. It is bright and open and I absolutely love it. This house has always been so dark. And now it is bright!!! I feel like we moved. I am loving finding a new home for everything and getting it all arranged.

Of course, we essentially redid the Greatroom at the same time. I really don’t have great before pictures, but I did find a couple of pictures and one is from Christmas but you’ll get the idea.

We were trying to figure out how to make more seating. I have hated this huge recliner since the day it was delivered. Pretty much it was my husband’s assigned spot. So I knew I wanted to find two smaller recliners so we could each have one. Also, the other furniture was just time to replace. The other pieces found good homes and will still be enjoyed by others for awhile.

I pretty much gathered all these pieces randomly over the past year. I am breathing a huge sigh of relief that now we have pulled it all out and put it together it looks good. Not sure what I was going to do if that had not been the case.

When we started this journey we had no plans of changing the blinds to shades. We even had the painters to carefully number them all with the intention of putting them back in place. But we met this wonderful local window shade guy and we went for it. These work on a remote and I considered not doing that, but I am so glad we did. Now one touch of a button and the shades are up, down or stopped in the middle. I love them! We did the kitchen, greatroom, dining room and office in the transparent shade and put the blackout ones in our bedroom. I would love to have them everywhere and one day….I just might.

I also really love having the sofa tables and these four little ottomans that double as a coffee table. These are small changes that made a big difference.

There are lots of little touches that I know I am forgetting about, but as I think of them I will share with you at a later date.

I was going to end with my favorite things. But it is impossible. I love it all!

I love the result. I did not enjoy the process. You will not have to worry about me becoming a house flipper. No thank you. I can remember buying my first car as an adult and the dealer tried to talk me into leasing instead of buying. His sales pitch was that I could come back and pick out a new car every three years. I can remember looking at him and saying, “I hate this process, I hope I don’t have to come back for like 10 years”. And so I feel the same about this. Anyone who is buying houses, fixing them up only to sell and do it again……I can not relate to you….in any shape, form or fashion. But more power to you!
