When we bought our house several years ago. The laundry room had this built in cabinet. It has doors at the bottom and top, but in the middle it has four open large cubbies. The previous owners had a laundry basket in each. So that gives you an idea of the size of these cubbies. They each held a full size laundry basket. It looked nice. I thought it was cute. I tried to use it like they designed it for a long time.
The problem is I am not a laundry basket person. Laundry happens to be one of my favorite chores. But we are more of a wash a load, dry a load, put away a load kind of family. So very quickly we started storing all kinds of other things in the laundry baskets, just a bunch of random stuff. Even more quickly it became a mess. So we ditched all the baskets and just tried storing things.
You may remember I bought all of these baskets with lids and labeled them and used two of the cubbies for those. Well that has worked well. The other cubbies I used for larger kitchen items that I don’t need every day but I do need to be able to access them……like slow cookers, coffee carafes, beverage dispensers, vases, etc.

All of that worked EXCEPT it just wasn’t pleasant to look at. Do you know why people have trouble shopping discount stores and thrift stores? Well I think it is because there are not enough like items together. A traditional store has seven or eight of everything and they are arranged by color. So it just resonates differently to your brain. Well the cubbies of miscellaneous stuff were leaning more toward the thrift store vibe. It just wasn’t pleasant.
So I need the storage, but I just didn’t want to see it anymore. I bought myself some tension rods and used some fabric I had in my stash. I just sewed a little pocket for the rod and hemmed them.

And just like that the problem is solved…..for now at least. We will live with this for a while and see how we like it. This is the thing, if you have a trouble spot or a spot that just nags at you just try something to fix it. If you don’t like it or need to adjust you always can. This is the third adjustment to this little area and who knows in a year or two it may get another.
Right now this feels much better. What little area in your house could you make a small adjustment and feel better about? Maybe this is your weekend.
I am off to find another project to work on.
