February Book Review

Welcome to this month’s book review. If you made the a new year’s goal to read more, there are definitely some good ones here to dig into.

I will start with my favorite of the month All the Lonely People by Mike Gayle. I loved this book. I did not want it to end. Hubert is the main character and he lives alone. He relays his every day life to his daughter over the phone. Everything changes when she decides to come for an actual visit. Hubert is all worked up about introducing her to his friends. I absolutely loved Hubert…..and the other characters. This is just the sweetest story and really made me think about people who may be lonely around me. Read this book. I think you will enjoy all these sweet characters and their relationships.

How Lulu Lost Her Mind by Rachel Gibson had some highs and lows for me. The story is about Lulu whose mom is having some memory issues. After her mom gets kicked out of a care facility Lulu takes over her care. My least favorite part of the book is how Lulu refers to her mother and her memory challenges. But there are some good parts to it. I was neutral about this one.

I enjoyed The Italian Girls by Debbie Rix. It is loosely based on two real real life accounts. It is set during war times and while it centers around the war it really focuses on relationships and how people helped each other out…..or in some cases turned on each other. The characters are well developed and easy to relate to. I would recommend this one.

Last up, Going There by Katie Couric. Let me just say, Katie definitely goes there. As I was reading it I kept thinking how does she remember all of this stuff. I mean the details. The specifics of conversations. And then I thought, if you are going to cross someone it is probably better for them to not be a journalist. They obviously take very detailed notes and keep them forever. I’ve always liked Katie and so I enjoyed this book. And I learned a great deal about a lot of other people.
